Carmen Gray
is a freelance film journalist, critic and curator who was born and grew up in New Zealand. A dual citizen of the UK, where she lived in London for eight years, she is now based in Berlin. She has written on cinema, art, urban design and politics for publications including The Guardian, The Observer, Sight & Sound, Screen International, The Calvert Journal, Filmmaker Magazine and Senses of Cinema, and is the former Film Editor of Dazed & Confused magazine. She has served on the juries of more than forty international film festivals, including Berlin, Moscow and Rotterdam. She regularly teaches writing workshops, and has spoken on panels on everything from European programming policies to current trends in documentary filmmaking and the legacy of director Věra Chytilová. She was previously a programmer for Berlin Critics’ Week, and is now on the selection committee for the International Short Film Festival Winterthur in Switzerland. She has also curated festival side-bars, including a selection of Icelandic artist films for Erarta gallery in St Petersburg, Russia.
