Julia Gaisbacher, born 1983 in Grambach near Graz (AT), lives and works as an artist and photographer in Vienna. She studied Art History (M.A.) at the University of Graz, Three-Dimensional Work / Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden (DE) and at Sint-Lukas / LUCA School of Arts, Brussels (BE). She was a master student of Prof. Martin Honert, Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden.

Julia Gaisbacher received a State Scholarship for Photography by the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria (2020), an Acquisition Prize as part of the “Contemporary Visual Art Award of The State of Styria” (2019), the Erste Bank ExtraValue Recognition Art Award (2018) and the Promotion Prize for Photography of the City of Graz (2016).

In her work Julia Gaisbacher is interested in the interconnections between social conventions in public space, architecture and individual representation in different media. The topics that she recently deals with are located around the questions of housing, public and private space, who has the power to decide about it and what social justice or injustice can be seen through that.
